Shadowrun - Watchdog by SteamPoweredMikeJ Shadowrun - Watchdog by SteamPoweredMikeJ
From the Shadowrun book "Rigger 2", FASA, 1997.

For a drone drawn long before such things showed up in the US arsenal, this design looks remarkably prescient...

I was going to make a version of this but reconsidered, a good design though....

I think that this is an example of what you might call the 'Star Trek Effect'. Namely, the designers asked themselves, 'what will do the job best?', instead of 'what looks futuristic?'

And, as happened on ST:TOS, when you went with 'form follows function', it rocked, while the 'make it look futuristic' stuff that many other artists went with looks unfathomably hokey.

Keep it real, Mike

All true, and also thanks. I always made it my primary goal to make all my tech look like something that would actually work...

Always thought Shadowrun's use of drones remarkably ahead of the real tech curve. Did you use any real references for the drawing back then?

My only references back then were a handful of military and aerospace books and magazines, so the individual parts were inspired by bits of different planes and helicopters. It's kind of astounding now to think that almost everything on this site was drawn without the benefit of the internet or Google image search. Sometimes I'd even have to go to the *shudder* library, and photocopy things!

Haha yes. A time where photo manipulation was near impossible, too.

And every gamer had a stack of photocopied character sheets.

Oh, those were brutal times. It's like we lived in the stone age...
