Dead Space Comic - 2-page spread by SteamPoweredMikeJ Dead Space Comic - 2-page spread by SteamPoweredMikeJ
A dramatic 2-page spread, pages 2 and 3 of my comic and video game that never happened, the Film Noir "Dead Space". 1995.

Ah, those comic-based video games that die on the vine. I know them all too well ;p

Are you hinting that you spent some time in the video game trenches then? That whole industry kind of beat the tar out of me. :P

In this case though, I came up with the game design first... but the producers at Radical Entertainment had decided they wanted to try their hand at making tie-in comics, and thought this property was a good fit. Which it kind of was really - There aren't a lot of projects I've come up with that would've made a great game, movie, TV show or comic, but this was one of them. Ah well...

Yep - did six years in the PC gaming trenches and suffered the same results as you. By the end of it I didn't want to draw OR play any games. It burnt me out.

Ugh, I hear you. I still play them a lot, but I vowed never to go back. Hours were just too long, and the teams had gotten so huge and beaurocratic that it just wasn't the least bit fun or creative anymore - Just a brutal grind as a cog in a machine.

Did you happen to work on any games I might've heard of?

Er... maybe? The Warcraft 2 Expansion Set? Deadlock 2? Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Simulator? Almost no scifi, sadly.... but not for lack of trying.

Wow, not having you do sci-fi seems just crazy!

My litany of games is probably pretty similar. A couple were minor critical successes, but most are lost in the sands of time. Anachronox recently made it onto a list of the greatest games nobody played, but who remembers Brett Hull Hockey '95, Gunmetal, The Outfit, or Heavy Metal: FAKK 2? I did do some skins for Dungeons & Dragons Online and a LOTR game that got cancelled... but like for you, not enough sci-fi.

HA! FAKK-2? Did you get to meet Kevin Eastman?

Haha, noooo. I lived in Dallas for a short time, while I was working at Ion Storm. My roommate there was the lead designer at Ritual Entertainment, and after I returned to Vancouver I did occasional skins for his games - But it was always just shipping files through the interwebs...
